Rotaract club of Matopos, LOL Entertainment and Umahlekisa Comedy Club in association with Baby Heroes Africa Foundation (BHAF) will on Saturday 10 September host Poetry and Stand-up Comedy- Charity Show dubbed “A Thousand Thoughts- A Thousand Laughs” at Hope Centre in Bulawayo.
The show is aimed at raising funds to help assist pre-term babies whose parents are disadvantaged to take proper care for them.
According to Dumisani Ndlovu, a Rotaractor, “In March this year we (Rotaract Club of Matopos) made a donation at Mpilo Hospital and everyone was touched when they saw the babies at the clinic. We realised something had to be done as most of the families did not have money or the resources to take care of themselves and to provide proper care for the babies. Hence we decided to partner with BHAF in this fundraiser so as to help these families and the babies.”
Pre-term babies suffer from physical under-development and because of that they are vulnerable to Respiratory Distress Syndrome, infections , Jaundice and Hyperthermia. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints most parents are not able to provide all the resources needed to help prevent casualties or pay hospital fees for the babies who sometimes have to stay for months at the clinic.
Statistics from the World Health Organisation(WHO) have shown that Zimbabwe has the fourth highest mortality rate of preterm babies in the world. There are 15 million pre-term births annually around the world. At Mpilo Hospital about 1000 pre-terms are born each year and 30% of them die due to pre-term baby com
plications. This has raised concerns from some community based groups leading to their joining hands to help raise funds in order to save these young lives.
Baby Heroes Africa Foundation, a community based organization in Bulawayo working towards ensuring the survival of preterm babies and the enhancement of their quality of life expressed their gratitude for the initiative and called upon the public to embrace this cause by attending the show in numbers.
According to Co- Founder and Director of BHAF- Chengetai Makuni, “Rotaract Club of Matopos has been generous enough to support this cause through the Comedy- Poetry Night. Baby Heroes aims to support 100 babies with Bundles of joy this year and have so far supported 32”.
Amongst other programmes, Baby Heroes Africa runs a Social support programme called Siza Ngothando “Help with Love” through which they run various projects to support mothers and their babies. The main project under this initiative is the “bundles of joy” projects which provide care packages to babies from disadvantaged homes. In the care packages the following are included; methylated spirit, maternity pads, diapers, nappies, cotton wool, maternity pads, soap, aqueous cream and petroleum jelly as well as blankets, towels and buckets.
The Poetry- Stand Up Comedy event will be headlined by Bulawayo’s most prolific comedian Ntando Van Moyo and Maforty together with Poets; Leme from Tanzania , Amy from Harare and Blazin Sane from Bulawayo.
The event is expected to raise at least USD700. Tickets for the show are going for US$3 for advance and US$5 at the door.
